Pastor
Training Programs
There are a number of undergraduate pastor training programs
at Indiana Wesleyan University. The Christian Ministries (CM)
degree will train you to be pastors or staff ministers in a
variety of church ministries. This pastor training program combines
classical religion studies such as theology and church history
along with a generous amount of practical ministry courses like
leadership, counseling, worship, and Christian education. The
degree meets the ordination requirements for some denominations
(e.g. The Wesleyan Church) and is a solid practical foundation
for those who go on to seminary. The students in this major
are highly active in campus ministries as well as working in
numerous local churches every week where they lead worship,
run exciting youth ministries, and work with needy people. The
pastor training program in Christian Ministry is our largest
degree program and includes both men and women who are headed
into church ministries in their future. It is an exciting and
large program. Come join us!
Another pastor training program at IWU is Youth Ministries.
This degree will train you to be a youth pastor when you graduate
from IWU, but it also gives you all the classical courses of
ministerial study too-so you are trained for both youth ministry
and other ordained ministries in case you do not stay in youth
work for life. The Youth Ministries degree is one of two degrees
(Christian Ministries is the other one) that is designed to
meet the ordination requirements for some denominations (e.g.
The Wesleyan Church). Many men and women who plan to be youth
pastors or who think they'll start out as youth pastors and
later switch to other ministries take this major. Like most
of our pastor training programs, it includes plenty of opportunity
for you to take the classroom learning and apply it to practical
experiences while working with youth in nearby churches and
in the community. You'll enjoy studying, growing, developing
and learning under the leadership of Russ Gunsalus, the lead
professor in this major. Come join us!
Another pastor training program offered through IWU's undergraduate
ministry programs is Christian Worship. This degree is for students
headed for worship ministries in the church. The degree combines
courses from three areas-Religion, Communications and Music.
You'll get your worship history and theology from the Religion
division, your drama, television, theater and production courses
from the Communications department, plus music and conducting
from the Music division. This pastor training program will train
you for leading and producing worship celebrations in a church.
It is especially designed to be combined as a double major to
enable you to have a broad variety of education and training
as you prepare for staff ministries in the church. Keith Drury
is the lead professor in this program and will personally mentor
you as you move through the varied courses in all three subject
areas. Your Christian Worship degree will train you for leading
worship in an exciting and expanding field. This pastor training
program is the most recently established major in religion.
